Built for the AI era
How AI fits this roadmap
AI assistants can now write SQL, spreadsheet formulas and chart code in seconds, but they can also be confidently wrong about your data. That moves the analyst's job toward asking the right question, checking the numbers and explaining what they mean. This roadmap teaches you to use an AI assistant every week and to test its answers against the raw data. In the later weeks you also build an AI-assisted analysis and learn where AI summaries of data fail.
The main project
AskTheData
One real business dataset that you clean, query, analyse and present as a dashboard and a written report, with an AI assistant that answers questions about it and a test set that shows when it is wrong.
What you will be able to do
- 01
Write SQL queries with joins, grouping and window functions, and check every AI-written query against a result you worked out by hand.
- 02
Clean and combine messy data in Excel and Python with pandas, and log each change so someone else can repeat it.
- 03
Run a basic analysis with summary statistics, comparisons and a simple test, and state what the result does and does not show.
- 04
Build a Power BI dashboard with a data model and measures that a manager can use without your help.
- 05
Present one finding in a written report, and build and test an AI assistant over your dataset, recording the questions it gets wrong.
01The route
Five months, one month at a time.
Each month ends in a milestone project, so you always have something to show for the work.
Month 1 · Weeks 1–4
Spreadsheets, SQL and AI-assisted work
Excel for cleaning and summaries, and SQL for querying tables. You set up an AI assistant, learn to prompt it with your table layout, and compare its queries and formulas with results you work out yourself.
MilestoneYour first dataset loaded, cleaned and queried, with a log of AI suggestions you accepted and rejected
Month 2 · Weeks 5–8
Advanced SQL and Python
Joins, subqueries and window functions, then Python with pandas for cleaning and reshaping data. You use AI to draft code, then test it on small inputs before trusting it.
MilestoneA repeatable script that turns raw files into a clean, checked table
Month 3 · Weeks 9–12
Analysis and statistics
Summary statistics, comparisons, trends and simple tests, plus asking a clear business question first. You use AI to suggest analyses and then check that they suit the data.
MilestoneA written analysis of AskTheData that answers one business question and lists its limits
Month 4 · Weeks 13–16
Dashboards and storytelling
Power BI data models, measures and report design, and presenting findings to people who are not analysts. You use AI to draft measures and summaries, then verify each number.
MilestoneA published Power BI dashboard and a short report a manager could act on
Month 5 · Weeks 17–20
AI over data, capstone and job search
Build an AI assistant that answers questions about your dataset, test it against known answers and record where it fails. Then portfolio, interview practice and applications.
MilestoneA tested AI question-answering tool, a portfolio and a working job-search pipeline
03What is inside
Everything a week comes with.
Every week is built the same way, so once you have done one you know how all of them work.
- 01
One project, AskTheData
You grow one dataset from raw files to dashboard, report and an AI assistant, so every tool lands in something real.
- 02
A day-by-day plan
Each week has a Learn part and a Do part, with a checklist so you know when you are done. Most weeks include a task to do with an AI assistant and a step to check its work.
- 03
A project in every milestone
Five milestones, each ending in something you can show and link to.
- 04
Reference topics
Short topic pages with check questions you can come back to.
- 05
A job track
Interview practice, portfolio and resume help, and an application plan.
- 06
Progress in your Study plan
Add weeks to your Study plan, give them dates, and finished days are counted for you.
04Is it for you
Who this is, and is not, for.
Better to know before you start than six weeks in.
It is for you if
- You are comfortable with numbers and want a job that answers business questions with data.
- You work in operations, finance, marketing or support and want to move into analytics and be strong with AI tools.
- You can give about 30 hours a week for five months, part-time alongside other work if needed.
It is not for you if
- You want a job guarantee. Nobody can promise that, and this roadmap does not.
- You want to become a machine learning engineer or data scientist. Separate roadmaps cover them.
- You want to paste AI answers into a report without checking them. This roadmap trains you to check them.
- You have never used a spreadsheet or a computer for work. Do a beginner course first.
?Questions
Before you start
- Is this roadmap ready?
- Not yet. This is the plan. The weeks are being written and checked against current job postings and official documentation. Leave your email and we will write to you when it opens.
- What will it cost?
- The price is not set. Roadmaps are bought once, with no subscription. We will announce it when this one opens.
- Will the plan change?
- It may. Before the weeks are written we check the tools against current job postings, so the lengths and months here are planned, not final.
- Do I need to pay for Power BI Copilot or other AI tools?
- Not for the core roadmap. Microsoft's own documentation says Copilot in Power BI needs paid capacity, so the roadmap will teach AI-assisted analysis with general AI assistants and will say which parts work on free plans once the weeks are written.
- Will it get me a job?
- It will give you skills and proof of work. It cannot promise a job on a fixed date, because hiring depends on the market, your location and your past work.
